Inspire, Instill, Ignite: Be an Example in 2014

In December 2013 I took time to review the past year and set personal and business goals for 2014.  I soon discovered 3 simple words that would become my inspiration for 2014.

Many times as entrepreneurs we try to separate our personal life from our business life.  I've learned over the last 10 years this is virtually impossible.  Whether you are a solopreneur, mompreneur, or entrepreneur with a large staff, embrace the gift that comes with entrepreneurship, melting your two worlds together.  Use this gift to leverage the opportunities that arise to better yourself and those around you.

Because of this I have decided to find ways to:

  1. INSPIRE Others to be Better
  2. INSTILL Values in Others that I Display, and
  3. IGNITE in Others a Passion for Excellence
By doing this one can not only improve who they are personally, but also improve how they handle customers, and this allows for building strong relationships.

What will you do in 2014 to be a better person, better business owner, and better member of your community?

3 Reasons Why A Cruise is the Best Vacation for a Mompreneur

View I Enjoyed from the Cruise Ship Deck
Any Mompreneur realizes that we find ourselves in a unique situation.  First we are a Mom.  This means that if our little one has a fever or upset stomach a project or phone conference has to be pushed back or rescheduled in order to tend to the sick child.

Secondly, we are a business owner.  Often times this means we wear many hats.  We are the sales rep, marketing expert, manufacturer, account receivables enforcer, branding guru, and the list goes on and on.

As a Mompreneur I experience what the majority of Mom business owners experience, not enough time to relax.  If you're a WAHM (Work At Home Mom), and you have small children at home with you during the day, every day can become an overwhelming mix of emotions that often affect your business.

Taking a break is a must.

Here are 3 reasons why I feel a cruise is the best vacation for a mompreneur.
**I am not an affiliate of any cruise line referenced in this post.

  1. You Get to Disconnect

Most cruise lines offer Wi-Fi or Internet access for a fee, and most mobile carriers allow you to connect to your data plan for an extremely high price while cruising.  Because of this a cruise is a great way to force yourself to disconnect. No Internet and no voice distractions.  You can still make phone calls, and your mobile carriers will gladly charge you more per minute than anyone should have to pay.

So set your smartphone to "Airplane Mode" and use this time to reconnect with your family. Spend time talking to your spouse and children.  Take advantage of the activities on board the ship.  You can do this guilt free, because after all, there is no email or voice mail to check.  No Twitter feed to read or Facebook page to check. You have no real mobile service.  Even if you port in the USA, lock the smartphone in the room safe, and enjoy your freedom.

  2. You Are Catered to and Treated Like Royalty

You can start your day with fine dining breakfast.  Hit the Lido deck at lunch for gourmet pizza, and finish your evening with an upscale dining experience.  Don't want to leave the room?  24 hour room service is there to enjoy.  You can experience all of this and never have to cook it yourself.  Unlike vacationing at a beach house or cabin in the woods where Mom is still expected to cook for the family, a cruise offers a full staff ready to do all the cooking, gourmet style.

  3. Awesome ALL DAY childcare.....Yes, I did say ALL DAY

I was a nervous wreck with the idea of leaving my precious girls at Camp Carnival**.  They have never gone to daycare, so this was a challenge for me.  I quickly got over the uneasy feeling when they both ran into camp ready to play.  They loved camp so much that when we got to port and started sight seeing they asked if they could go back to Camp Carnival instead.

It was great for my husband and I to be able to spend the day together, just the two of us, knowing the girls were in good hands on board the ship.  On another day it allowed me to get some much needed me time.  During the cruise I was able to eat lunch, BY MYSELF, on the lido deck.  Enjoying a good book and fresh sea air.
Vacationing on a cruise ship allowed this mompreneur time to rest, enjoy my family without distractions, spend time with my spouse, and reconnect with myself.  I highly recommend any mompreneur start planning their next family vacation on a cruise ship.

How @Target Made My Monday Better

It was 26°F when I woke up this morning.  Some reading this post would love to see a 26°F morning at the end of November, but for this California girl living in South Carolina it was a brutal morning to have to get out of bed and take the kids to school.

Work went fairly well for a Monday, and then we got the brilliant idea to visit a fast food restaurant where kids eat free....during peak dinner time.  An hour later I had dealt with tears because the 4 year old couldn't go to the playground.  The 9 year old was torn between keeping her book from her kids meal or getting ice cream; so I was happy to be heading home.

While I waited for the kids to finish brushing their teeth I checked my Pinterest account and was overjoyed when I saw the message "Target Pinned to Brunch for Mommy Friends". I was like a nerdy school girl getting asked to go to prom by the most popular guy in school.  Who knew such a simple message could make this Mommy's day.

How I Got Target to Pin to My Board

I can't recall if it was from a Facebook post or a tweet on Twitter that I learned about Target's latest promotion "Best.Party.Ever. with David Stark".  I quickly followed the steps on the board to participate (promotion ends 11/27/2013). After many anxious hours of wondering 1) would Target really follow me on Pinterest? 2) would they really pin to my board? and  3) would they really offer me great party suggestions catered to my tastes? My wait was over.

By Sunday afternoon I received the answer to my first question, and at the end of a frustrating Monday my last 2 questions were answered.  All with a resounding, "YES".  I simply followed the directions, to the letter, that Target gave participants.  Target delivered on their promise to provide "personalized inspiration to help (me) create (my) Best.Party.Ever."

I LOVE the great suggestions Target & David Stark pinned to my board.  While it is still secret, follow me on Pinterest, and soon I will make the board public for everyone to enjoy great party planning inspiration.

Last Minute Kids Party Tray

If you ever find yourself in a hurry to put together a party tray for kids try this quick and simple party tray.  I made it recently for a family get together and the kids (and adults) devoured it.  It's also great when you need to create an allergy friendly party tray for kids.

Prep & setup time: less than 10 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 6 pre-packaged peanut free marshmallow bars (Rice Krispies Treats or similar)
  • 16 sandwich cookies (Oreo cookies or similar)
  • 1-2 cups multicolored marshmallows
  • Kid safe toothpicks
  • Party tray (a chip and dip tray works great!)

Directions:
  1. Cut each marshmallow bar into 4 pieces. Put a toothpick in each small piece. Set aside.
  2. On your party tray alternate placing a marshmallow bar piece and sandwich cookie on the tray until it is covered.
  3. Stack another sandwich cookie on top of the cookies already on the tray.
  4. Arrange remaining marshmallow bar pieces nicely on the tray.
  5. Creatively place multicolored marshmallows on tray.  If using a chip and dip tray place the marshmallows in the "dip" section of the tray.
  6. Serve and watch all the smiles as the party guest enjoy!

My Top 5 Repinned Pins on Pinterest

(Say that title fast 5 times)

I thought it would be fun to take a moment and see what pins on Pinterest have been the most popular of all my 2,014 Pins.  I didn't join the world of Pinterest until mid-March 2013, and I admit that I am "mildly" addicted.

  1. Board: JMB Designs, LLC Web Design & Marketing

    Copyright belongs to original owner

Music/Internet related graphic  Sometimes people just want to read something that makes them smile and is light-hearted. This is my most repinned pin and most of those pinners did so within hours of this pin being added to my company board.

  2. Board: Ideas for a Suburban Garden

    Copyright belongs to original owner
Companion Planting Strawberries This popular pin surprised me.  I pinned it after I bought strawberry seeds for my oldest daughter.  I thought it would be a great way to start learning about container gardening.  I had also taken an interest in growing green peppers, and I wanted to know how compatible the two seeds are if grown together.  The website I pinned is full of great information.

  3. Board: Why I Love the West Coast

    Copyright belongs to original owner
132 Things to Do in Sacramento  I was raised on the West Coast of the United States and still love it after being away for almost 20 years.  I lived most of the time in Sacramento and found this great page on tripadvisor's website.  This pin gets repinned just about every day.

  4. Board: Wheat Free, Corn Free, Soy Free Cooking

Cooking & Baking Gluten-Free: Xanthum Gum Substitutes This pin takes you to a great website with Gluten-Free cooking and baking tips.  The specific page I pinned discusses substitutes for xanthum gum, a popular ingredient used in GF baking.  My daughter has a corn allergy and xanthum gum is derived from corn so I wanted to learn if I could substitute that ingredient in my baking. You can!  This website explains how.
  5. Board: Kid's Hair Styles

    Copyright belongs to original owner
Beads, Braids and Beyond: Updo Hairstyle I have 2 girls and I am always looking for cute hairstyles.  This updo is the 5th most popular pin of all my pins.  I have several pins from this website.  They have great photos and tutorials for doing various hairstyles.

  6. PSSST!  Look Down.  Don't forget to pin this page.

Easy Dinner: Ground Turkey & Veggies with Alfredo Sauce

Ground Turkey Zucchini Alfredo over Pasta

This recipe is fast and easy. I adapted this recipe from the original at: http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=342915

Great way to feed the family veggies because the alfredo covers the "veggie" taste.

1 lb. ground turkey
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped zucchini,
1 jar Alfredo Sauce

Directions (Makes 4 servings):

  1. Brown ground turkey in skillet
  2. Add zucchini and onions and cook for about 5 minutes
  3. Add Alfredo sauce, heat through, cook until zucchini is slightly tender. (I covered the skillet for about 10 minutes to help soften the zucchini)
  4. Serve over pasta or rice
I have also used broccoli and it taste great.

5 Great Cartoon Mompreneurs

I have been subjected to watching cartoons for the last 8 years.  I realized the other day that many of the creators of these cartoons have made wise decisions to portray the Moms as very capable women.  As a Mompreneur these are the 5 that stand out to me.

Allergy Friendly Snacks (Kid Approved)

**Please note: These are snacks that my daughter it is able to eat, and she doesn't seem to have a reaction after eating them. Please check all product ingredients as some may have trace amounts of soy, sunflower, or corn oil.

  1. Rice cereal ( brand names: Rice Krispies, Rice Chex): I should buy stock in any company that makes this type of cereal. This is my daughter's #1 breakfast choice and after school snack.
  2. Crispy Rice Treats/Marshmallow Bars (brand name Rice Krispie Treats)
  3. Rice Crackers: Usually found in the Asian section of the grocery store. (may contain soy by-products)
  4. Apples with Cinnamon:  This is a great breakfast choice. I slice the apple and heat it up in the microwave for about 2 minutes and then sprinkle on some cinnamon. I also give this breakfast on testing days because cinnamon is known to help with test taking anxiety.
  5. Lunch Meat Wraps: This is my daughter's recipe.  She takes deli sliced lunch meat, adds ranch dressing, adds a baby carrot, and then rolls up each individual wrap. Turn it into a lettuce wrap by taking the lunch meat wrap and then wrapping it inside a lettuce leaf.
  6. Fresh Fruits and Veggies: We can never go wrong with a variety of  fresh fruits and vegetables that my daughter is not allergic to. Some of our favorites are apples, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, carrots, cucumbers, and green peppers.

Share your great allergy friendly snack recipes for kids.

Wheat Allergy Diet Tips

Many everyday food & drink items contain wheat
When you or your child is diagnosed with a wheat allergy it can be overwhelming.  So many questions come up, and it can leave your head spinning trying to find answers that make sense. Here are a few great tips and resources that have become invaluable to me as the mother of a child with wheat allergies.

Is gluten-free the same as wheat free?

No. Gluten is a protein found in wheat and other cereal grains. So an item marked “Gluten-free” (GF) may still contain wheat by-products such as albumin and globulins.

Read ingredient labels carefully, even on GF foods. Check out Whole Foods' website for great information and recipes for a wheat free diet.
(
http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/healthy-eating/special-diets/wheat-free)

What everyday foods do I have in my cupboard that may contain wheat or wheat by-products?

The list can be shocking when you learn how many products we use daily that may contain wheat.
This is just a partial list based on the extensive list I found on the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford website.

  1. Instant chocolate drink mix
  2. Cereals made from farina
  3. Products with malt added
  4. Semolina
  5. Spelt
  6. Commercial frosting & icing
  7. Ice cream & sherbet
  8. Ice cream cones
  9. Prepared mixes or packaged pudding containing wheat flour
  10. Worcestershire sauce
  11. Soy Sauce
  12. Chocolates
  13. Chocolate candy containing malt
  14. Graham crackers

To see the full list go to: http://www.lpch.org/DiseaseHealthInfo/HealthLibrary/allergy/wheat.html

My next blog post will provide a list of some of my daughter’s favorite wheat free and wheat substitute foods. You can share below the wheat free foods you love and it may be featured on the list.

Corn, Wheat, Soy or Nut Allergy?

A simple side dish can become an allergy sufferer's nightmare
I have learned a lot over the last few months about products that seem safe for those with corn, wheat, soy, or nut allergies.  Many products are developed using corn or add wheat or wheat by-products.  Others are “normal” foods that you may not realize are related to either corn, wheat, soy, or nuts.

Nuts & Soy

My daughter is severly allergic to peanuts and soy.  After her allergy diagnosis we restricted her diet to better control her allergy attacks. During dinner one night I made a kidney bean and brown rice side dish.  She had a severe allergy attack and I was baffled. I looked at her plate desperately trying to figure out what triggered the attacked.  Then it hit me, peanuts are a legume; are kidney beans legumes also?  A quick Google search answered my question.  It may have been an obvious association to some, but not to this everyday Mom.

According to Livestrong.com  “A kidney bean allergy is rare, but you may be at greater risk if you're allergic to other foods in the legume family. Peanuts and soy beans are two of the most common legumes that cause an allergic reaction.” (Read more: http://www.livestrong.com/article/368375-kidney-beans-and-allergies/#ixzz2MLFkzDpG)
The article on Livestrong.com is a must read for anyone with legume allergies.

Xanthan Gum (used in foods, such as bread, as a gelling agent and thickener)

This substance is made by fermenting corn sugar with a bacteria.  If you have a corn allergy this could become problematic.  If you are a baker with a corn allergy there is a great article on Xanthan Gum substitutes (http://glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/2008/12/baking-cooking-substitutions-for-gluten.html)

Wheat & Gluten

Our pediatrician warned me about ingredients that may contain wheat such as whey. According to Livestrong.com, “Certain whey proteins may contain wheat as an added ingredient.” (Read more: http://www.livestrong.com/article/445889-does-whey-have-gluten-in-it/#ixzz2MLOFtyhX )

100% whey is usually gluten-free, but be sure that any products containing whey say they are gluten-free.

Mommy Guilt: The Allergic Child

Two puffs in the morning, two at night. A tablespoon of “magic elixir” twice a day.

“Do you have your Epipen? What about your fast acting inhaler?”

This has become
the daily routine in our home.  My daughter’s asthma inhaler and allergy medications have been integrated into our lives and become just as common as brushing teeth and bath time.

I grew up with the same routine and hoped none of my children would be afflicted by such a fate.  At six weeks she was diagnosed with eczema.  As she got older we dealt with seasonal and environmental allergies.
In 2010 she was diagnosed with asthma and the daily routine mentioned above became a part of our life. Then in 2012 it was determined she had severe food allergies.

Mommy guilt comes and goes.

“Why didn’t we take the sneezing fits, lethargy, and random skin breakouts seriously?  Why didn’t I investigate more preventative measures the moment she was born knowing I come from a family with severe allergies? Why did I think I was special and would have perfect babies?”

Being the Mom of an allergic child is challenging.  Everyday you're faced with the reality of the frailty of life.  Your daily desire is to close your eyes, count to three, and take all your child’s pain and suffering away; but, alas, you are powerless to do so.

I use my mommy guilt as motivation.  It’s my motivation to be more aware, more vigilant, and more proactive with my daughter’s health. My mommy guilt is my power to become a stronger person.

So, You Have An Allergic Child

For eight years my husband and I knew we had a “sensitive” child.  Diagnosed at 6 weeks with eczema after the “little red cluster bumps” started to appear.  I gained comfort talking to other Moms who had successfully dealt with their child and eczema.  We dealt with the occasional “flare ups”, tried a variety of medicated topical ointments, special lotions, and soaps.  It may have been an occasional inconvenience, but I learned that there was always someone who had it worse.  The mother I would meet whose child was covered from head to toe in misery, wearing socks on her hands, and never able to enjoy being a baby because they were too busy scratching.

At age 2 it became obvious there was a peanut allergy.  We “treated” the symptoms with advice from friends and the Internet.  A doctor never diagnosed the peanut allergy “officially”, but took our word for it after hearing the symptoms our daughter experienced.

It appeared that she also had environmental allergies.  As strange as it may sound, this was not a huge concern to me because most of my side of the family suffers from environmental allergies.  I requested allergy medicine for her, and was given whatever my heart desired; no tests, no real questions.

At age 6 we received the diagnosis of Asthma. A day of playing in a bounce house on a bad ozone day resulted in a night of labored breathing and ended with 2 1/2 days in the children’s hospital.  The amazing thing that came out of this experience was the wonderful, bright eyed, full color child that emerged when we left the hospital.  So many things now made sense.  The years we told her to “close your mouth and breath through your nose”; the times we wondered why there were dark circles under her eyes.  It all became clear.  The poor child wasn't getting enough oxygen.

We now had a new routine in the house.  It was a routine I was familiar with as a child. Two puffs of the Asthma inhaler in the morning and two puffs at night.  I lived it for over 20 years, and now I had to get back in the groove with my child.

Despite the problems we encountered in the first 6 years of my daughter's life we still had no official diagnosis for specific allergies.  When my daughter was in the second grade we learned of a little girl in a school close to us who died after eating a peanut a classmate gave her.  That particular school was not properly equipped to handle a peanut allergic reaction.  The next day I asked our pediatrician if we could go see an allergist so we could get an EpiPen.  Instead of a referral to an allergist the doctor gave us the prescription for the EpiPen.  At least now our family and the school would be properly prepared in case of an emergency.

Two more years went by and I was getting more concerned over violent sneezing fits, skin rashes, and overall odd reactions my daughter experienced after eating certain foods.  I requested to be referred to an allergist for the second time to find out about her food allergies and was kindly told by our pediatrician that she could order a food panel blood test.  After much protest by my daughter the blood draw was done.

Here is what I wrote in my journal the same day I received the test results from the food allergy test:

"My heart is heavy.  My Mommy guilt meter is strong.  The ray of hope of a healthier life for my daughter is what is pulling me through each minute.  My first reaction is, "Great.  My kid is allergic to 5 of the top 8 allergens common to most with food allergies, and also corn.  I am going to have to make everything from scratch, read every label, make drastic changes....”  And then I think of life for my child with the possibility of not needing daily medicine.  Being able to enjoy her day without happily playing one minute, and then the next minute laying in bed, sneezing uncontrollably, with no relief in sight except to just “let the reaction pass”.  I remind myself that having to make such drastic changes to avoid wheat, corn, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, and soy may be the one change we have to make to save her life.  The one change that may prevent just one trigger from causing a major attack that she may never recover from."

There are Moms I know whose babies are allergic to “everything”.  Yes, anything that goes into their mouths may be the one thing that causes them to have a violent allergic reaction.  I feel for the Mom whose child has to eat the same thing every day because anything else will send them to the hospital.  My child wasn't told she couldn't eat.  She was told she had to eat differently, and her life is worth ALL the extra we have to do as a family.

My journey with raising a child with severe allergies has begun.  Tell me about yours.

I Paid $1.75 for My Groceries

I just had to share the great money saving weekend I had last weekend that also spilled over to the first part of the week.

Earthfare (www.earthfare.com)

The last time I was in an Earthfare was about 5 years ago. It's been that long only because I live 30 minutes away from the closest store. I decided to visit their website last week and see what specials they were advertising.

Great deal #1: If you sign up for their email club you will instantly receive a coupon for a free whole chicken or veggie burgers.

Great Deal #2: They now have a rewards program called "Tomato Bank" where you can earn reward points various ways. Every 100 points=$1. At the time I signed up they were offering 1000 bonus points (1000 points = $10).

These deals were motivation enough to take the drive. I picked out a little over $24 worth of items. I used a $.75 off store coupon on an item. I then used my free chicken coupon which saved me a little over $12. The $10 Tomato Bank money was applied and that left me paying just over $1 plus applicable taxes PLUS I received 5 points towards my next reward.

Definitely worth the 30 minute drive with 2 kids.

Dominos (www.dominos.com)

During the first part of January Dominos ran a great promotion where you could buy 2 medium 2 topping pizzas for $5.99 each and then receive $5 toward your next purchase within the time frame they specified. So we order 2 awesome handmade pan pizzas (worth the extra $1 each for the crust) and then they emailed my coupon code to use within 10 days.

We used the coupon on Monday. Why Monday? Because right now Dominos runs their large 3 topping pizzas for $7.99 Monday - Wednesday. So we were able to enjoy a fantastic Brooklyn style, large pizza for only $3.24 (includes tax).

It was a great weekend and wonderful Monday to be a Mommy and save money. What great money saving experiences have you had lately? Share below.
